José Maria Vargas (1786-1854): medical doctor, surgeon, anatomist, obstetrician optician, professor, botanist, chemist, dentistris, geologist, mineralogist and mathematician. This paper highlights some interesting aspects of his long and outstanding work in teaching and scientific activity. First republican dean reformed medicine studies at the Central University of Venezuela where he taught human anatomy, surgery and chemistry. President of the Directorate General of Education and author of the Code of Public Universities and Academies in Venezuela.
