Summary

According to the International Federation of Associations of Anatomists (IFAA) anatomical terminologies are the basis of medical terminology. The need for a common histological vocabulary becomes increasingly important for communication between the different researchers in the Medical Sciences. Since early last century it has been a prime objective for many morphologists to achieve this understanding. In the present study we report part of the history of Terminologia Histologica, some generally accepted principles, a comparison of terms used in Terminologia Anatomica, as well as examples of appropriate and inappropriate use of terms. We conclude that the correct use of Terminologia Histologica is critical in scientific and medical language allowing clear and accurate communication between those who participate and work in the Medical Sciences.

KEY WORDS: Terminologia Histologica; Terminologia Anatomica; Medical Education.
