Summary

The interphalangeal joint of the hallux (AIH) is a synovial joint of the ginglymoid type. The AIH can present anatomical variants in different locations and degrees of ossification; located in the plantar area of the foot, a joint known as the interphalangeal bone of the hallux (HIFH) can be found. When AIH dislocation occurs and closed reduction of the distal phalanx is performed, it has been reported that the procedure it is not always successful, since the HIFH interposes itself between the phalanges in their joint space. It is important to determine the prevalence of HIFH and its biometrics studied in a Chilean sample, indicating its importance and establishing its correlation with clinical practice. Eight hundred foot radiographs of Chilean individuals aged between 15 and 90 years were analyzed. HIFH, bilaterality, biometry, and sex were identified. The HIFH was found in 23.5 % of the individuals studied; 68 % of these were bilateral. There was no statistical significance between the varia- bles analyzed. In the right foot, the average length and width were 4.37 mm and 6.76 mm, respectively, and in the left foot, 4.43 mm and 7.45 mm, respectively. The prevalence of HIFH found is lower than that reported in the lit radiological studies. The records of HIFH length and width fall within the ranges described in the literature. It can be stated that the presence of HIFH does not depend on age or sex, as their relationship is not significant. It is important to consider the presence of this bone during AIH dislocation treatments.
