Summary

The correct use of the Terminologia Anatomica International (TAI) is crucial for adequate scientific communication. Proposing new terms that are more in line with those indicated by the International Federation of Associations of Anatomists (IFAA) and the terminology itself, presents great challenges. For this reason, this paper addresses an analysis from a historical, etymological and morphological point of view, of the terms elevator and lifter. In conclusion we can SAY that although elevator is more widely used and accepted by the TAI, these terms are absolute synonyms, and we propose that lifter can be accepted for incorporation into TAI.

KEY WORDS: Elevator; lifter; Terminologia Anatomica; Muscles.
