Integration of Flipped Classroom and Moodle: Curriculum Design Proposal with a Focus on Learning Analytics for Teaching Human Anatomy
Néstor Nahuelcura-Millán
Summary
SUMMARY: The implementation of innovative learning strategies, such as the inverted classroom, has scarcely been applied in the teaching of human anatomy. The effective application of these models requires meticulous planning and the use of LMS platforms, such as Moodle. However, despite the incorporation of these technologies, no guidelines have been described that ensure successful implementation. Therefore, the objective of the study is to describe a Flipped Classroom course design in a human anatomy course, through the Moodle platform, with a focus on the extraction of learning analytics; descriptive observational quantitative design. Inverted classroom was implemented in a first year anatomy course 2023, with 28 undergraduate students. With the support of Moodle, activities were created for each moment of the strategy, namely, pre -class, class and post class, establishing a study course design, which allowed extracting analytics from digital learning resources. This was complemented with the grades obtained in each pedagogical unit and final average. The activities "Lesson", "Quiz and "Assignment" were utilized across the various phases of the Flipped Classroom approach. Correct answers, number of attempts, and grades achieved in tests, group work, and post-tests were recorded. Mean grades were 5.3±1.3 for post-tests and 6.1±0.4 for group work (1.0 to 7.0 scale). A moderate positive correlation was found between post-test scores and unit averages (p<0.01, r=0.60). An appropriate curricular design, based on the Flipped classroom strategy, ensures the correct implementation of innovation, which in conjunction with the use of LMS platforms such as Moodle, contributes to the success of the strategy. Additionally, the extracted learning analytics provide valuable insights that can be employed in monitoring student performance.
