The manuscript addresses the controversy surrounding the inappropriate use of the term “candidato a doctor” in spanish-speaking countries, particularly within rigorous scientific disciplines. This term is the equivalent of “PhD candidate” in anglo-Saxon academic contexts, where it signifies a significant milestone. The manuscript contrasts its precise meaning in such systems with its more lenient and sometimes premature use in Latin America. The critique focuses on the lack of rigor and the potential ethical concerns that this practice may entail, suggesting that it undermines academic and professional integrity. The importance of transparency and authenticity in the presentation of credentials is emphasized, and strategies are proposed for educational programs to promote academic integrity by teaching the correct use of terminology and encouraging ethical reflection among doctoral students.
